Elementary school
An elementary school or primary school is an institution where children receive the first stage of compulsory education known as elementary or primary education. Elementary school is the preferred term in some countries, particularly those in North America, where the terms grade school and grammar...

in Freeport, Maine, serving grades 3-5. Mast Landing School was designed to house three small learning communities, called programs. The programs are Harraseeket, Soule and Spring Hill". While "all three programs follow designated curriculum guidelines developed by the Freeport School District and its teachers", they vary in the way they teach the students the curriculum.

Harraseeket

Harraseeket Program, named after the Harraseeket River in Freeport, has the philosophy "that children benefit from the support of family-like groupings of peers and teachers" as well as helping students see themselves as lifelong learners, helping them organize their schoolwork, and gain self-confidence to share in a group setting.

Harraseeket does this by keeping students with the same group of peers and, for most classes, the same teacher. On top of the other subjects, teachers also teach study skills, reinforced by nightly homework. Harraseeket also holds Assemblies every other week and classrooms take turns presenting what they have learned.

Soule

Soule Program, named after the George E. Soule Elementary School, an alternative elementary school located in South Freeport, Maine before Mast Landing was built.

Soule has the philosophy that "children feel safe and learn best in a small, family-like atmosphere", and that "all students can learn and meet academic standards".

To meet this philosophy, teachers meet regularly with students to maintain the students progress in school. Teachers also design their instruction to meet the needs of individual students. Unlike Harraseeket, students in Soule have different teachers throughout the day, with some change in classmates, in order to subject them to different learning styles and different groups of children. Soule program also encourages students to be self-directing and make choices about their learning. They do this through guided choice of some classroom and program-wide activities.

Spring Hill

Spring Hill Program, originally named Multi-Level when the school was founded, was named after Spring Hill, the hill on which Mast Landing School was built.

The Spring Hill philosophy is a "balance of directed learning and student choice as the children practice making responsible decisions".

An integral part of the Spring Hill Program is the Spring Hill Constitution. The Constitution, based on the U.S. Constitution, "empowers students to act as legislators who have a voice in their daily experiences".

Like Soule, students in Spring Hill change teachers and classmates with each subject they take. Teachers in Spring Hill meet with parents to "determine academic and social goals for each student".
