 seriously in 1976 and has been teaching caricature carving since 1985. He specializes in carving multi-figure scenes from a single block of basswood
Tilia
Tilia is a genus of about 30 species of trees native throughout most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. The greatest species diversity is found in Asia, and the genus also occurs in Europe and eastern North America, but not western North America...

. His figures depict “ordinary folks doing ordinary things in extraordinary ways.” Reminiscent of Norman Rockwell, Marv's pieces capture the humor, tenderness and irony in the human situation.

His awards are many and include honors from the International Woodcarvers Congress in Davenport, Iowa where he has won “Best of Caricatures” in 9 of 10 years, the Upper Midwest Woodcarvers Expo in Blue Earth, Minnesota and the Nordic Fest Woodcarving Exhibition in Decorah, Iowa.
He was chosen as Wood Carving Illustrated Magazine's wood carver of the year in 2006. Currently, Marv is featured in the Fall 2007 edition of Woodcarver's Magazine.

Marv is a founding member of the Caricature Carvers of America (CCA - http://www.cca-carvers.org). The CCA is dedicated to promoting the art of caricature carving.

Marv’s favorite caricaturist is Al Hirschfeld (recently deceased at age 99, a New York City sketch caricaturist depicting performers on Broadway in a flowing stylized manner).
