 (where his mother hailed from) but the family returned to their then home of the Bronx, New York shortly afterwards. When he was aged 11, the family returned to Ireland to his father's native home of Clare

. Later, Marty went on to study at UCC in Cork and spent some years teaching. In 1988 he entered the world of broadcasting on joining the (since defunct) local TV channel of the then Cork Multi-Channel TV. In 1989 he joined the new Clare FM
