Mark Schmitt is an American
political scientist and author, and executive editor of The American Prospect
, who focuses upon tax and budget policies and the history and role of ideas in politics. He primarily writes, amongst other numerous articles for popular newspapers, a column called 'The Out Years' and is the author of The Decembrist weblog. He also frequently appears in discussions with other media personalities on BloggingHeads.tv
. In 2009 he changed the name of his column to "Ways And Means."
Mark Schmitt is a noted voice on reform of the political process and an expert on campaign finance, congressional procedure, and state-level politics. He has written extensively on budget and tax policy, and on the history and role of ideas in politics. In 2005, Mr. Schmitt began a monthly column, “The Out Years,” in The American Prospect; in 2009, he changed the name of the column to "Ways and Means". Mr. Schmitt has also written for The New Republic, The Financial Times, and many other publications, and has contributed chapters to numerous books. In 2003, he launched The Decembrist, which was named one of the five best political blogs in 2004 by Forbes. He is also a frequent contributor to the widely read blog, TPMCafe. Currently, Mr. Schmitt serves as the executive editor of The American Prospect.
Mr. Schmitt was Director of Policy and Research at the Open Society Institute, and served for seven years in the U.S. Senate as a speechwriter and later as Policy Director for Sen. Bill Bradley. He was also a senior policy advisor on Bradley’s 2000 presidential campaign. Schmitt serves on the boards of the Center for Policy Alternatives and the Proteus Fund.
Schmitt was executive editor of The American Prospect beginning in 2008. He has been a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, director of the Governance and Public Policy program at the Open Society Institute, and policy director to Senator Bill Bradley.
Currently Schmitt is the Roosevelt Institute's Senior Fellow and Director of the Fellows Program. Before that he was executive editor of The American Prospect, a position he held since 2008. He guided the Prospect during a period when it won several awards, including the Utne Reader award for best political magazine, for its coverage of the policy and political battles of the first two years of the Obama administration. Mark has worked in government and philanthropy, as well as journalism. He was policy director to former Senator Bill Bradley in the 1990s and a senior advisor on Bradley's 2000 presidential campaign, and directed a large program on political reform at the Open Society Institute. Before joining the Prospect, he was a senior fellow at the New America Foundation.
