At 18 years old he is highly regarded as one of the most promising young players in Ecuador by the media. He has developed a high-speed, fast-paced game, and can play in several different positions such as wing back left, midfielder left and left winger, which makes him a very useful player in Emelec's squad.

Early in 2010, Caicedo was involved in a move to Deportivo Quito

 which was very controversial and ended with the player returning to Emelec. He and a rogue Colombian football agent claimed that he was out of contract and could move on a free simply because he turned 18, and denied having signed a three-year contract until December 2010 with Emelec. He even attended Deportivo Quito's training camp for a couple of days, declaring in the media that he was a free player and would not return to Emelec even if he was threatened with a ban. The electricos quickly reacted via the Ecuadorian Football Federation and demonstrated he was under contract and the FEF immediately ordered the player to return to his club and Deportivo Quito to cease and desist from signing Caicedo.

He returned to Guayaquil and after apologizing to the club and the fans is once again part of Emelec's squad.

In the 2010 season, Marcos Caicedo has scored 2 goals. His first one was in the Clasico del Astillero, with an Emelec 3-0 over Barcelona. Caicedo scored the first goal for Emelec.
