, it is the larger of two secondary schools in Witham. It is a relatively new school as it is a replacement for the John Bramston School.

In October 2006 John Bramston School was graded as Inadequate for "Overall effectiveness of the school" by Ofsted and as a result the school was placed into Special measures

. A new head, Mike O'Sullivan was appointed in Easter 2007 and a new head Mr J Szynal was appointed in the summer of 2010. The school became the Maltings Academy in 2008.

The Academy is due to be replaced by a new building that is currently under construction by Carillion plc

who commented that the Academy was "making good progress towards raising standards".

The Maltings Academy Sixth form college is currently located at the East side of the building and has 10 class rooms, a common room and this is also home to the main reception, the library and the headteachers office, in the new building the College will be located at the North side of the building occupying its own 3 floor quarters meaning the students from the college will no longer have to interact with the lower school and this will also give the college a more individual feel as at the moment it is combined.
