Mala is the name of a small town in Thrissur district
of Kerala
, south India
. K. Karunakaran, the former Chief Minister of Kerala, represented Mala constituency from 1965 to 1995. The famous Malayalam film actor Mala Aravindan is also a native of Mala. There is a Jewish synagogue at Mala town http://www.panoramio.com/photo/41251796). At the moment it is in ruins. The famous Pambu Mekkattu Mana (temple) is located here and attracts thousands of devotees every year.
Another place of historic importance in Mala is the Jewish Cemetery, located near the Mala police station. There used to be a thriving Jewish Community in Mala many decades ago and their old synagogue is still kept as a monument in the centre of Mala town. One of the oldest Carmelite Monasteries is located in this town namely Kottackal St. Theresa's Monastery, which is built by Blessed Chavara Kuriakose in 1867 AD. Mala is also an educational hub consisting of two Higher Secondary Schools six English and Malayalam Medium High Schools, an Engineering College, BEd College, an MBA College, a Govt. ITI and many other professional institutions. There is also a Christian girls' college Carmel College.
There are also plans for a Medical college here.
Mala is very scenic. Its proximity to the 'back-waters' connected to Arabian sea, makes it a unique small town between Chalakkudy and Kodungallur (where St. Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ is believed to have landed in AD 52).
Mala used to be one of the pet constituency of the former Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. K. Karunakaran and he has made his way to the State Parliament a number of times. Also, the famous Malayalam film comedy actor Mala Aravindan is from Ambazhakadu area of Mala. Mala is a very peaceful place where Christians, Hindus and Muslims live in peace and interact socially and harmoniously. The villagers are blessed with a good transport system. It has Private and Government Transport Bus Depots from where you can travel to all the major towns in the region.
There is a Kongini Temple 'Mungunda Krishna Swami Kshetram' near Malakulam.

Also famous Iranikkulam Mahadeva kshetram (Mahadeva Temple) is just 7 km away from Mala town. This divine place is famous for the "Panchaiswaryangal" (means 5 miracles) and the unique brahmani pattu (This is a ritual in Kerala for praying to the goddess Parvati by brahmani people. In this temple the ladies from vadakke pushpakam house do the ritual) everyday. It also boasts about Ganga Theatre with its digital DOLBY systems. The KSRTC BUST STAND is now at ruins it was the brainchild of former chief minister of kerala Sri Karanakuran. The ancient synagogue is completely ruined because of the carelessness of the Mala authourites. The Jewish cemetery is now completely transformed into a garbage dumping yard. Boat service will be starting soon at Mala pond shortly.
