The total population of Makrysi dropped almost by half between 1981 and 1991. There are 15 families for Makrysi in 2001. The population of Makrysi between 1991 and 2001 rose again.

Until the 20th century somewhere in the 1920s, it was known as Salesi (Σάλεσι).

Until the pavement of GR-7 in the mid-20th century, the village didn't had paved roads or electricity. Until the mid-1980s, much of the houses were stone-built.

The Megalopoli Bypass was opened in 2001.

Kato Makrysi is a small hamlet situated SW of Makrysi and near the Megalopoli By-pass. The village and the surrounding area was devastated during the great forest fires of 2007. The entire surrounding forested area was burned and many of the houses were destroyed. There are currently very few people living in the village.
