Madi Ceesay

Madi Ceesay is a Gambian journalist. He has served as president of the Gambia Press Union, and has been imprisoned and harassed for his journalistic work. Ceesay's work has provided critical support for freedom of the press in Gambia, where journalists are frequently imprisoned and attacked.

From 1996 until 2006, Ceesay worked for the Gambia News and Report. He first worked as a reporter, and later as deputy editor of the journal. Ceesay was arrested in 2000 for his coverage of the opposition political party the United Democratic Party

Ceesay became the general manager of The Independent in 2006. In March 2006, government security forces closed the journal's offices and arrested staff following the publication of articles critical of an alleged coup attempt. Ceesay as well as the editor of the paper Musa Saidykhan were imprisoned for three weeks without charge by the Gambian National Intelligence Agency.

In 2006, he was awarded an International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists
