 teams select players who are out-of-contract or have had their options declined by their current teams. Players must meet minimum eligibility thresholds which include age and years of MLS service. The Re-Entry Draft was created in the 2010 collective bargaining agreement between MLS clubs and players. The first Re-Entry draft took place after the 2010 MLS season. The draft is divided into two stages, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the last placed team getting the first pick. Stage one requires teams to pay players they select their option year salary. Stage two allows teams and selected players to re-negotiate salary. Eligible players electing to participate in the Re-Entry Draft who are not selected are free to negotiate with any MLS club.
