Route description

Most of the route outside of Albion is a two-lane blacktop

. The road expands to four lanes inside the city. For most of its length, starting from its eastern terminus at the junction with Eaton Road, M-199 follows the old route of Michigan Avenue

 (although it is now named "Austin Avenue" within the Albion city limits). It continues north on 25½ Mile Road and 26 Mile Road to I-94. The route received the M-199 designation in 1998.
