History

The Michigan State Sanitorium was established in 1907, primarily to treat patients with tuberculosis. After 1955 the hospital also handled patients with mental illnesses. In 1961 the sanitorium became the Howell State Hospital, and later the Hillcrest Center in 1978. The facility operated until 1982 when it was abandoned, and the building finally demolished a few years after.

To serve this facility M-155 was assumed into the state trunkline system in 1931. It began at a junction with US 16

in Howell, what is today Business Loop 96. It continued to serve the facility over the next fifty years and beyond. After the hospital was abandoned, the route markers remained on the road, serving a field, until they were finally removed in 1987.
