Luke Gary Braid is a rugby union
footballer who plays for the Bay of Plenty Steamers
in the Air New Zealand Cup
. He is a part of the Chiefs wider training squad for the 2009 Super 14
season. He plays for Tauranga Sports in the Bay of Plenty
Premier Division and in 2006 went to England on an exchange and played for Cranleigh School in Surrey, helping them to an unbeaten season. His older brother, Daniel Braid
is also a professional rugby player.
Luke has also played for three national rugby union
teams. On 11 October 2006 Luke played for New Zealand Schoolboys
defeating the Australian Schoolboys
18–8. Luke received the Bronze Boot award for his excellent performance.
In 2007 Luke played for the New Zealand Under 19's
winning the Under 19 Rugby World Championship
and played for the New Zealand Under 20's
winning the 2008 IRB Junior World Championship
.
Once again Luke proved himself to be at the top of his class winning IRB Junior Player of the Year
at the IRB Awards
in London and the Bay of Plenty
Junior Sportsperson of the Year.
Luke made his Chiefs debut on 19 February 2010 against the Lions. It was a winning Debut for the young openside as the Chiefs ran in 65 – 72 winners away from home. The match set several new records for Super Rugby including the highest aggregate score in a single match (137 points), highest score by an away side (72) and the most tries scored in a Super Rugby match (18). Braid appeared 8 more times during the 2010 season as the Chiefs finished in 10th place.
