. She is a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party.

She held a number of brief positions in the Executive Council of British Columbia, including Minister of Government Services, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister of Transportation and Highways; where she used her ministery powers in changing the landscape of BC's Helmet law by issuing 5 exemptions to not require approved protective headgear for potenial life threating incidents, whereby most notable of the exemptions is to allow "anybody wearing religious headwear that makes compliance impossible" now a status quo. This was seen at the time as pandering to the large Sikh population in BC, and bending to their will of religious freedom. As quoted by boone " I believe these exemptions are fair and progressive" has had several questions, in that, while it appeared at the time as bending to the political pressure of Religious Freedom it has quite certainly been the view that a possible agenda may have been at play. She stated that her decision predated her decision to enter federal politics and was due to the unease she felt over being a part of so many school closure decisions last year and an unwillingness to "do the government's dirty work" anymore.

On May 2, 2011, she was defeated by Conservative Party member Bob Zimmer in the federal Canadian election by 62% to 25%.
