List of New York State Historic Markers
Encyclopedia
This is a list of New York State Historic Markers by county. There are over 2800 historical markers in New York State. The program was started in 1926 to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Revolutionary War and was discontinued in 1966. It was managed under the Department of the Education’s State History Office. This program has now become a database and management program. The Museum of New York now maintains the archive and historical markers. Tourism development, marker replacement and research thrive on the present database even though the historic markers themselves are no longer funded by the state appropriations. Private organizations are welcome to submit the necessary paperwork to have a new marker erected and the Museum will acts as a clearinghouse for proposals to monument local historical sites.
