She is a faculty affiliate of the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, the Taubman Center for State and Local Government and the Rappaport Center for Greater Boston. At Harvard, Professor Bilmes founded and runs a program that assists local communities to manage their budgets and finances. Government Service

Prior to joining the Harvard faculty, Bilmes served in government during the Presidency of Bill Clinton. She was twice confirmed by the U.S. Senate, as Assistant Secretary for Administration and Budget, and as Chief Financial Officer, of the United States Department of Commerce. She previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Administration. She has been appointed to several high-ranking commissions,including a Treasury Department commission to examine the viability of the Inter-American Investment Corporation. She served as a commissioner on the bipartisan National Parks Second Century Commission and is currently serving a four-year term on the National Parks System Advisory Board.

Bilmes is the author of several important books, book chapters and academic papers. She is co-author, with Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, of The Three Trillion Dollar War

Bilmes has written extensively on financial and budgetary issues in newspapers and journals including the New York Times, Washington Post, Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Atlantic Monthly, Foreign Policy, Harpers, Vanity Fair and the Milken Review. She has testified at numerous congressional hearings on subjects including veterans benefits, public service and the cost of the Iraq War. Bilmes has appeared on many national broadcasts, including the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, CNN “World News Tonight”, “In the Money”, the “Lou Dobbs Show”, CBS Evening News, “Democracy Now”, NPR’s “Fresh Air”, “All Things Considered”, “Here and Now”, and “On Point”. She is featured in Charles Fergusons award-winning documentary film about Iraq, “No End In Sight,” and "Rethinking Afghanistan" by Brave New Films.

Bilmes holds an A.B. in government from Harvard University and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School. She previously spent 10 years working as a management consultant with The Boston Consulting Group
