The first edition of the Liffey Champion was printed on 17 May 1991 and has, over the past 17 years, established an important presence in the north Kildare and Lucan community.

Published weekly, the paper has a respectable circulation. It is in a tabloid format, and varies in length, averaging about 72 pages long, with approximately half of its pages being printed in full colour.

The paper is currently priced at €1.90 but also carries lots of advertising.

, courts and various meetings in the local communities as well as major happenings, both news and sport. Also stories of human interest dominate its pages.

The paper has seen a lot of competition come and go over the last 17 years as the Dublin West/Kildare North area bloomed in Ireland's Tiger economy.

One of its regular features is the popular 'Nitebytes' page, which featured for several years the nightclub scene photographs of Morgan Treacy and in more recent times the excellent pics of Peter Shaughnessy.

The 'vox-pop' page, which was first written by Petrina Vousden and later years by Eithne Dunne, Jean Crampton and Aisling O'Donnell. This section has proven to be popular with readers. The Vox Pop consists of a contemporary issue put to locals of the town.

The newspaper is not a member of the Audit Bureau of Circulations Irish division, and as such, no official circulation figures exist. None of the other newspapers in its circulation area are members of the ABC either, so comparisons are impossible to make. It does not have a functional online presence.

Former Journalists

Despite being a relatively small newspaper the Liffey Champion has had a number of journalists and photographers who have gone on to take up a variety of positions in national and international media.

Former photographer Morgan Treacy, is a multi-award winning sports photographer with INPHO sports agency.

Former Champion journalist Darren Ennis went on to work for The Star, Irish Independent and Newstalk radio station before a career with Reuters (international news agency) where he was awarded global journalist of the year in 2009. He left Reuters in January 2010 to take up his current role as press, media and strategic communications advisor to Catherine Ashton, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Local journalist from Leixlip David Lynch worked for the Champion before working for a variety of other media, he is an award winning author, journalist and historian who has since reported from Palestine, Israel and Lebanon.

Former Champion journalist Sharon Tobin worked as a news reporter in TV3 and now works with RTÉ News.

Former Liffey Champion journalist Deirdre O’Keefe was a women’s magazine editor and now works with the Evening Herald and regularly appears on TV3’s Midday programme.

Petrina Vousden worked for both the Liffey Champion and its local rival Leinster Leader, she is now a journalist with The Daily Mail.
