Le Rouget will not be found on many 19th century maps, having grown from a hamlet as a result of the railway. It was not granted "commune" status until September 1945 (and therefore was able to appoint a mayor), but is now a more important commercial and employment centre than the nearby historic cantonal centres of Saint-Mamet-la-Salvetat
