Career

Latino is a Brazilian singer. His "trademarks" are a shifty smile and a nice young boy way of being. However, before becoming that famous, while living in the USA, Latino worked as barman, magician, cook, dancer and even as waiter. This international experience allowed him to be in contact with the North American street dances, his source to create the unique exotic and sensual swing, that drives the feminine fans mad.

Going back to Brazil, Latino successfully started his artistic career in 1994, recording his first CD Marcas de Amor. “Me Leva” (Take me) and “Só Você” (Only you) attracted many fans because of its nice dancing rhythm. The album sold over 600 thousand copies and Latino received Gold, Platinum and Double Platinum records.

“Eu Amo Você” (I love you) and “Louca” (Crazy girl) came two years later in Aventureiro album. In 1997, was the turn of a daring innovation: Latino released a Spanish CD version in Mexico. Latino (1998), was remarkable for “Vitrine”, the non-stop played track in some radios of the country. The next year’s album was Latino 2000. Its first rank song was “Solidão é Demais”.

After that, the singer dedicated himself to producing some artists and to presenting a TV programme – “Sábado Show”, on Rede TV!. By this time, a Brazilian artist called Luka released her first single “Tô Nem Aí” (I don't care), with lyrics written by her and Latino. This song was a number one hit in all Brazilian radios and also # 1 in Italy, Germany, Spain and others European countries.

The song was # 1 around Europe and was one of 2004's most successful summer hits, as well as one of the best selling singles of the year across Europe. The Brazilian version, “Festa no Apê” (Party at the Pad), talks about a party held by the singer himself in his apartment that became wild and resembles “Dragostea Din Tei” in rhythm and melody. The songs in this album tell true stories. “Renata”, is the experience of Latino’s friend love disillusion.

Always in a good mood, Latino makes jokes with his fans in “Umazinha”, “Amor de Pizza”, “Amiga Tati” and “Mulher Bebê”. Two other artists’ successful songs were recorded in a new version to join this album. “Amante Profissional” and “Knife” (Rockwell) mixed by Tchorta - the same producer of Kaleidoscópio band. Tchorta’s new version of Knife was a boom at discos.

Latino – 10 Anos Ao Vivo – CD e DVD (Latino – 10 years live)

In February 2005, Latino released his first live DVD, Latino – 10 anos ao vivo, recorded in Rio de Janeiro. He held the show with five musicians and dancers (Danielle Martins, Vanessa de Andrade, Eloah Uzêda and Elaine Azevedo). This DVD sold over 150 thousand copies. In its repertory we get “Amante Profissional”, “Papo de Jacaré”, “Tô Nem Aí”, “Conquista” (featuring singer Buchecha), a funk medley by Dennis DJ and the newest ones “Renata”, “Umazinha” and “Festa no Apê”, from Latino Apresenta as Aventuras do DJ L – Festa no Apê album.

Latino would fit well playing the role of an advertising boy of a famous Brazilian campaign, which says “I’m Brazilian and I don’t ever give up”. Every time it seems the artist’s career has got to the end he comes to the spotlights again with some kind of novelty that takes him to the hit parades’ chart. And it doesn’t matter if he shows up again as a solo singer, a composer, a producer, a dancer or even presenting some other new kind of talent or skill.

Latino Apresenta As Novas Aventuras do DJ L album was produced by Dalmo Belloti and Latino himself. The managing direction was headed by Christovam Neumann and José Carlos “Kaká” Silva. The CD was released by the label Up In The Air Produções and distributed by EMI Music. Besides that, all the songs were written by him, except for “Sacode no Patrão”, that was written by Andinho, Latino’s friend.

The new album arrived in stores in the end of 2005 celebrating a gold record and facing the challenge of keeping the cheering party thrown at the singer’s apartment – as “Festa no Apê” says – going on. In other words this challenge means: to make the spectacular success and vibration continue in Latino’s career journey.

He sold more than 350 thousand CDs and DVDs copies in 2005. In the same year there will have been held about 230 shows all over Brazil, including a two weeks tour in USA. What is the secret of such a success? Roberto Souza Rocha, whose nickname (Latino) was given during the time he lived in the USA, ascribes the fact to one reason: audacity. “My work followed an irreverent and daring way, which provided me with a unique identity”, he says. “You need to create, to mix things, to get out of sameness”.

Latino Apresenta As Novas Aventuras do DJ L album, in the same way of the previous CD, innovates. “I created a completely crazy character, DJ L, who has many adventures to be told”. These stories (believe it or not) are real and Latino emphasizes that. “Most of the situations happened to friends of mine. I pick up those stories from people with whom I get along”, he guarantees. “Fans also send their experiences to my web site. I bring them to the songs”. “Hipnotizando no Sinal”, “Insônia” and “Sacode no Patrão” are examples of that kind of inspiration.

In Latino’s opinion, the first three CD tracks will be people’s favorite songs sooner. “Maria Gasolina” (Mina Quebrete) is about girls who just want to date guys that have expensive cars. “The expression mina quebrete is used in Rio de Janeiro to refer to women that explores man financially, demanding material things”, explains the singer. “Catia Catchaça” is the true story of Latino’s friend who loves drinking and always exaggerates, overdrinking. The next day he is unable to remember anything and argues with his girlfriend. The third song is “Meu Gol de Placa”, which brings double sense in meaning mixing soccer and sex. It was a great success during the World Cup.

Actually, some other songs have hot plots. “Amigo Fanho” is the story of a snuffling guy who is cured after having sex for the first time. “Odalisca” talks about a man who makes sex alone, inspired by a feminine figure – odalisque. “Sacode no Patrão” is the situation of an often downtrodden employee that gets fed up of being oppressed by his bully boss, and decides not to stand that situation anymore.

Latino usually goes to discos to be aware of the new rhythm tendencies. “I pay attention to what is going on and try to make a mix adopting my own way. This new CD has both percussion and pop new-fashioned hits including nice suitable melodies, besides a good reggae ton influence”, he says. The result is a funny, dancing, irreverent CD, not running the risk of being totally out of the traditional standards. “I bet everything on this new album. It’s all or nothing. It’s outrageous! I remember that when I recorded “Festa no Apê” I thought about two possibilities: or the CD would be an amazing release or a failure at all. At the end, everything worked out perfectly. I’m not afraid of anything, I take the risk”.

Definitely, Latino doesn’t ever give up. And, considering his career works and all his achievements, it’s better to take that guy seriously.

Latino na Pista – REMIXES (Latino on the dance floor – Remixes)

Roberto Souza Rocha was kindly named Latino when he lived in the USA. Besides his tanned skin (common in Latin Americans), the main reasons for this nickname were some of his personal features. Attractive, irreverent, audacious and versatile; strong marks in Latin American people’s personality.

Singing, composing, dancing and producing, the artist proves his Latin features in every kind of work he faces. Numbers can not only show his popularity and success, but also confirm that the right usage of these elements altogether can perfectly work out.

Latino sold more than 4 million CDs along his career, has a sum of seven gold record discs, four platinum and two of double platinum. Besides that, two gold record DVDs and a platinum one enlarge his achievements list.

His amazing boom also reached the fever of ring tones in cell phones. Four of the most downloaded songs in Brazilian mobile phones are his. “Festa no Apê” was downloaded more than five million times.

The new CD Latino na pista – Remixes album takes the singer’s style to the dance floor. The remixes had been created by Latino himself for an international work; however, Som Livre really enjoyed it and here you are. “Festa no Apê”, “Me Leva”, “Só Você” and the newest one “Catia Catchaça” are on the play list. “Catia Catchaça” was composed based on a friend who loves drinking and always exaggerates, overdrinking. The next day this guy is unable to remember things and argues with his girlfriend. “Tem culpa eu?/Tem culpa Cátia?/ A desgramada da Catchaça” shows its irreverence and is being a great success expectation for next summer.

This is his first CD with Universal Music distribution. This album was also produced by Ian Duarte and Fabianno from Maxpop Studios. The same producers of the smash hits “Clap your hands” by Ramada. The managing direction was also headed by Christovam Neumann and José Carlos “Kaká” Silva. This CD brings two songs from the CD Latino na pista – Remixes, “Catia Catchaça” remix and “Vagalume”. The big hit of this new album is the Portuguese version for “Shark Around” by El Chombo entitled “Nem Noção”. His fans have been producing lots of funny videos on YouTube about his songs and his crazy lyrics. Latino promises to always keep the good mood in his next productions.

Junto E Misturado - Latino (Joined Together – Latino)

Everyone who knows Latino’s (Roberto Souza Rocha) personality and life style can figure out his new album Junto e Misturado is gonna be a great surprise.

Once the humble boy from Jacarezinho (a poor region in Rio de Janeiro city) dreamed about being an international pop star, he decided to follow his idols’ footsteps to the showbiz. Even though too young, Latino started this audacious task when still living in the United States with his mother and his stepfather. Nowadays, he is one of the musicians who most reaches the top of hit parades in Brazil.

He knows the secret to get there. First, he pays attention to what new rhythm tendencies are going on in American and European charts. Then, he carefully chooses the great beat successes and, after that, mixes these newest dancing rhythms with the right story to be told in lyrics. By the way, when telling stories, Latino also shows his talent as a chronicler, picking up friends’ and unknown people’s life experiences and fitting them into involving rhythms.

With all these trump-cards in hands, he has already got plenty of hits. From the beginning of his career, when he was known as the king of funk melody, we get “Me Leva” and “Não Adianta Chorar”. Follow-up songs became also an explosion. “Mexe com Lalá”, “Festa no Apê”, “Renata” and “Cátia Catchaça” are some of them.

Junto e Misturado is remarkable for all this kind of irreverence. But the main innovation in this album is not only to present versatility in the new songs, but also to perform these new songs together with friends, as if they were chatting at a bar table. And the great surprise is that Latino’s friends are some of the most admired singers in Brazilian pop music. Singers with whom he has been having the opportunity to work together for all these fifteen years of career, like Banda Calypso, Jammil, Dudu Nobre, Belo, Bruno & Marrone, Buchecha, Perlla, André & Adriano, Stevie B…

That was a great challenge to gather so many phenomenons at the same record!

From more than 300 brand new songs already composed, Latino has chosen the most suitable one to be performed by each artist. Ian Duarte and Fabianno took a ride in the production of the 14 songs in the playlist of the album.

Party time, everyone! There comes Lalá with a lot of beats to sway the rhythm of this whole year. Be it summer, autumn, winter or spring.

Junto e Misturado is about relationships. Its first track is “Amigo Fura-Olho”, in which Latino performs with his old friend Daddy Kall – one of the dancers of the Brazilian group You Can Dance.

In this song, Latino and Daddy Kall take the rhythm of “Ella e Yo”, a song of a Dominican band called Aventura. This rhythm is mixed up with a suffering story of a guy who is in love with a married woman. The song brings some kind of suspect and, at the end, you will be presented to the mystery that covers this surprising drama.

“Amigo Fura-Olho” took eight months producing. After that, Latino made a journey through the country music and formed a partnership with the country music duet André & Adriano, known for their great success “Beber, Cair e Levantar”. “Pancadão ou Sertanejo”, co-written by Andinho, is the song released by the trio Latino, André e Adriano in this album. The purpose of the hit is to create a never existing before meeting: the popular style from the country music with the funk beat from Rio de Janeiro. A love story hangs this theme.

This idea reminds us of Aerosmith and Run DMC’s in “Walk this Way” clip, when breaking the wall that put apart rap and rock shows.

“The country music makes people cheer; the strong beat makes people sway”. In English, that’s what says the Portuguese version of this song’s chorus, already a success on shows and on the ranking of the most watched videos at the You Tube site. It breaks not only walls between different styles and rhythms, but also the record in video successes charts.

The Samba shows up with Dudu Nobre in “I have fun with the ‘wrong’ one girls” (“while I don’t find out the ‘right’ one”). The singer Tania Mara features in dance music with “Se vira”. In this song Latino plays the role of a love adviser in trying to help his friend (Tania Mara) to deal with a turbulent relationship with her boyfriend. “Get out of this / isn’t he smart? / so, let him take his turn!”

Latino’s most known personal and professional feature is humor. This strong trademark can be enjoyed in “Isabel”, a reggaeton produced with his partner Mister Jam. This song tells the suffering story of a man ignored by the woman with whom he is in love. This song is a chronicle. It talks about a “slave” love. It takes some words and expressions from historical slavery aspects at the time Portuguese Crown Settled Brazil. These words and expressions enhance the plot’s idea. The parody begins by its name “Isabel”, the Portuguese descendent Brazilian princess’ name at that time, in the nineteen century.

Latino and Mister Jam use the sample of “Retirantes” to strength the idea. “Retirantes” was a song composed by Dorival Caymmi and Jorge Amado. It is most known for being the theme of “Escrava Isaura”, an old famous Brazilian Soap Opera, which plot was exactly slavery at the colonial Brazilian history.

The sky is the limit for Latino. Once taking a Romania success and transforming into “Festa no Apê”, now it was the turn for the Croatian band Colonia to borrow one of its successes. The inspiration was “Oduzimas Mi Dah”, perfect swing to fit Calypso’s rhythm and musical profile. The Brazilin version is “Proposta Indecente”. “Don’t double cross us anymore / You always come with Indecent Proposals” sings Joelma while Chimbinha plays the guitar solos.

Junto e Misturado presents many love conflicts throughout its soundtracks. Other titles in the playlist are “Altos e Baixos” with Belo, “Ponto Final” sang by the rapper D’Black and “Preciso Parar de Chorar” with the country music singers Bruno & Marrone.

Besides all of that, we still get much funny and creative versions track by track. The Turkish hit “Simarik” (Tarkan) became the provocative Latino and Perlla duet funk melody “Selinho na Boca”. Botella, which means Bottle in Spanish, has a lot to do with the versatility of “La Botella”, the story of a guy who breaks up the romance with an unfaithful girl and, because of that, celebrates drinking a lot with his friends. Jammil and his band bring us this episode: “How could I have been so naive? / trusting a whore / My world has fallen over my head / thanks to all my friends for helping me enjoy life”.

Ray Parker Jr. collaborated with the soundtrack of the film “Ghostbusters”. The same-name musical base rhythm is in “Caça-Fantasma”, performed by Latino and Buchecha. Its lyric is about exorcising old love misunderstandings. “It is time to free this heart”, says the song.

In closing, Junto e Misturado brings a historical meeting between Latino and the phenomenon of funk melody Stevie B, in whose steps Latino has inspired his career. Steve’s songs were a boom at the time Latino was still a little boy and enjoyed funk parties at clubs. They perform “Spring Love (Come Back to me)” together.

The bonus tracks bring us some other surprises: “Amigo Fura-Olho” in a remixed version and “Isabel” in its English version, named “Slave 4 You”, releasing Latino’s news to the international market.

Although Junto e Misturado is done, the project of performing with other celebrities has just begun. However, now it is time for Latino to be on the road, travelling in a big bus with the whole band and the eight dancers, the Latinetes, crossing Brazil altogether to perform huge gigs around. Artist has to be where the people are, and Latino, the old shifty smart guy, won’t dare to fight against that popular saying.

“People know about success, not us!”, he says. That’s it! We are all joined together (– Junto e Misturado).
