The Lashup Radar Network was a temporary post-war

system for air defense surveillance that initially used World War II equipment. Improved search radars included the Western Electric AN/TPS-1B Radar
, which was first used for Lashup in 1948 (Air Defense Command activated an AN/TPS-1B at the Portland WA airport--Lashup site L-33
--in March 1948 for detecting aircraft headed to the nuclear Hanford Site
). Also developed was the General Electric AN/CPS-6 Radar
which was at the L-12 Navesink (Twin Lights) Radar Station, New Jersey
in 1949 (an alternate source claims 1948); and the network had over 46 sites, with Lashup site L-47 in Tennessee

For ground-controlled interception
, control centers directed Interceptor aircraft
based on received Lashup radar data, e.g., an AN/TPS-1B at Lashup site L-1 provided data to the Roslyn Air Warning Station
's Manual Control Center in New York (an alternate source claims L-1 was in Maine); and the Silver Lake Air Warning Station
in Washington state.
In March 1949, Congress authorized the construction of a permanent radar network; "ADC radar site" P-1 was at McChord AFB
from June 1, 1950, to April 1, 1960; and the Army Anti-Aircraft Command (ARAACOM) was formed in July 1950. Several of the Lashup sites were used in ADC's permanent system--e.g., the Palermo AFS Lashup site became permanent site LP-54 from 1951-1961--then site Z-54 in the 1963 NORAD radar system
