. Per the State of Florida Constitution, the sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the county. The current sheriff is Gary S. Borders who was appointed by former Governor Jeb Bush

 following the death of Sheriff Chris Daniels in 2006. He was elected in 2008. In November 2007, Sheriff Gary S. Borders led the agency to be awarded with a certificate of accreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, consequently, both the Law Enforcement and Corrections divisions of the Lake County Sheriff's Office are now accredited.

Specialty units

Like many law enforcement agencies, the Lake County Sheriff's Office also has deputies with specialized training. These deputies perform their normal full-time jobs (road patrol, detectives, detention deputy, etc.) and perform one the specialty units as the needs call for.

Sheriff Gary S. Borders

Gary Borders was sworn in as Lake County's elected Sheriff in January 2009. Before that, he served the remaining term of Chris C. Daniels after Daniels was killed in a school bus accident during a charity bus race at New Smyrna Beach Speedway in October 2006. He is currently pursuing his Criminal Justice Administration degree. Sheriff Borders began his career as a corrections officer with the Osceola County Sheriff's Office
