The Moon is Earth's only known natural satellite,There are a number of near-Earth asteroids including 3753 Cruithne that are co-orbital with Earth: their orbits bring them close to Earth for periods of time but then alter in the long term . These are quasi-satellites and not true moons. For more...

. It lies northwest of the larger crater Ansgarius
Ansgarius (crater)
Ansgarius is a lunar impact crater that is located near the eastern limb of the Moon. When viewed from the Earth, the crater has a highly oval shape due to foreshortening, but the rim is actually nearly circular. To the northwest of Ansgarius is the crater La Pérouse, and south is Behaim. The rim of...

Kapteyn (crater)
Kapetyn is a lunar impact crater that is near the eastern limb of the Moon, to the west of the crater La Pérouse. West of Kapetyn is the slightly smaller Barkla, and farther to the west-northwest is the prominent Langrenus....

. This crater appears foreshortened due to its location, but the rim is nearly circular when viewed from orbit.

The rim of La Pérouse is not significantly worn by subsequent impacts, and its features are well-defined. Terraces line much of the inner wall, and there is a small outer rampart. There are also small outward bulges in the rim to the south-southeast and south-southwest. Within the interior floor is a central ridge offset to the northeast of the mid-point, and this formation is somewhat elogated to the southeast. There is a small crater in the southeastern part of the floor.

The name is sometimes spelt 'La Peyrouse'.

Satellite craters

By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to La Pérouse.
