Kokuvil Hindu English School was founded in 1910 as a feeder school for Jaffna Hindu College

. The school became a “grant in – aid school” in 1914. In 1926 it was promoted to a "C grade" junior secondary school. In 1940 it was promoted to a "B grade" senior secondary school. Handy Perinbanayagam took over a principal in 1949.

Most private schools in Ceylon, including KHC, were taken over by the government in 1960.
