Koay Teng Hai is the Penang State Assemblymen for N25 Pulau Tikus.

Personal Details

Koay Teng Hai is happily married with two sons. After graduating from Chung Ling High School in the year 1991, he started trading as a businessman in the industry of printing and advertising. Between the periods of 1992 to 1996, he had successfully finished his studies in LCCI, obtained an ABE Diploma and an ABE advanced Diploma. In the year 2000, he was awarded an MBA from Heriot Watt University in an off-shore programme.

Political career

Before Koay Teng Hai started his political journey, he had been influenced by his father who was also a member of the Democratic Action Party

 (DAP) and was printing materials for the party. In 1999, Koay Teng Hai joined as a volunteer in helping the DAP for the General Elections. However, the DAP faced one of their worst defeats as party leaders Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh

After joining the DAP, he was appointed as deputy chairman of Penang DAPSY and the following year elected the chairman of Penang DAP Socialist Youth for the tenure of 2001 to 2005. During 2003 DAP Socialist Youth Annual General Meeting, he laid down the ideology and roadmap of the youth, he also mentioned that good governance should have longevity, grassroot penetration and a wide coverage.

He was then elected DAP Socialist Youth National Organizing Secretary. This position had widen his DAP brotherhood network with all the young DAP youth leaders. He had understood the meaning of social democracy, this also further strengthened his beliefs that the only way to save Malaysia is through Change, only Change can bring Hope to all Malaysians.

During the 2004 General Elections, he was nominated as the candidate for KADUN Air Itam by the DAP. He lost to the candidate from Gerakan by 2824 votes. However, he did not give up and in 2008, he was again nominated but this time elected as the State Assemblyman for KADUN Pulau Tikus defeating a Gerakan heavyweight Dr Teng Hock Nan who was once considered a potential future Chief Minister with the majority of 1714 votes.

He was defeated in the 2008 national youth elections, this has pulled him back from national to state level party committee. At the same time, he was elected as the DAP Penang state secretary. His service centre was opened at no 10, Jalan Peirce which has been active in conducting activities, including the setting up of NGOs, Crime Prevention Unit, Bomba Sukarela for the welfare of the residence of Pulau Tikus and also made strong proposals to the State Assembly for the overall good of the people.
