Born as Laurence Mills in 1932, Khantipalo was ordained as a Buddhist novice in London by Dr Hammalawa Saddhatissa

After spending 3 years in India Khantipalo moved to Thailand where he was reordained into the Dhammayutika Nikaya.

In 1973 Khantipalo moved to Australia where he helped establish Wat Buddharangsee in Stanmore, Sydney. In 1978, with Ilse Lederman, a German woman who ordained as Ayya Khema, he established Wat Buddha Dhamma in Wisemans Ferry in bushland just outside Sydney.

Khantipalo disrobed in 1991 leaving Wat Buddha Dhamma and later marrying. He later founded the Bodhi Citta Buddhist Centre in northern Queensland.

Studies in India

While in India Khantipalo studied for 6 months with Buddharakshita in 1961 and later spent two short periods staying with the English monk Sangharakshita
