Geelong's best placed player at the 1978 Brownlow Medal count, he transferred to Fitzroy in 1979 and appeared in all 24 games that year, two of them finals.

Continuing his involvement in Geelong football throughout the 1980s, Higgins coached Newtown & Chilwell from 1981 to 1988. He was appointed as coach of Sturt
