He started playing guitar in the late 1970s as a founding member (along with Geoff Tate on lead vocals, who would eventually front Queensrÿche) of MYTH, a progressive rock band in the suburbs of Seattle, Wash. After MYTH disbanded, Gray went into a recording engineer career, working on various albums in the capacity of recording engineer, mixer, and eventually, producer. A number of MYTH demos appeared on the deluxe edition of Queensryche's 2007 "Sign of the Times: The Best of Queensryche" release. Some of these songs contained the same song titles and partial lyrics to many classic Queensryche tracks.

In 1998, after achieving success as a producer for a variety of bands, including Candlebox and Brother Cane, Gray rejoined former MYTH bandmate Tate when he became a guitarist in the progressive metal

In 2011, Gray was hired to produce Queensryche's 11th full length studio album Dedicated to Chaos
