After making guest appearances during the second and third seasons of "Bonanza", Browne returned to the show in the fifth season in a different role: Laura Dayton, a widowed mother who is courted by Adam Cartwright (Pernell Roberts
). The role was created with the expectation that Roberts would be leaving the series at the end of the season, allowing for his character to make a convenient exit. However, when Roberts unexpectedly renewed his contract for another year, the show's writers created a storyline in which Laura and Adam's cousin, Will Cartwright, (played by Guy Williams) fall in love and leave to get married.
