Karbala province is a province in the nation of Iraq. The capital is the city of Karbala, a holy city for Shi'ite Muslims; it houses the shrine of Imam Hussein (AS), a heavily revered figure in Shi'ite Islam. Shi'ite Muslim pilgrims from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan and India flood into the city to visit the shrine. Karbala is also the 8th of Iraq's 18 governates to be handed over by Coalition forces to full Iraqi government control.
