History

The Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Karachi is premier Chamber of the country, representing the mainstream of economic activities by virtue of its location in industrial and commercial hub of the country. The present Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Karachi was formed in 1959 through the amalgamation of four trade bodies in Karachi at that time, namely, the Pakistan Merchants Association, Buyers and Shippers Chamber, Chamber of Commerce Pakistan and All Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry. It was registered under the Trade Organization Ordinance 1961, which regulates the working of the Trade Bodies in the country.

. It has two classes of membership, namely, Members and Town Associations. This Chamber has currently around 14,861 direct members both industrialists and traders. Five Industrial Town Associations, namely, S.I.T.E., Landhi, Korangi, Federal 'B' Area, and North Karachi, are affiliated with it.

Thus, the Chamber's effective membership comes to around 16,000. As a consequence of its location in a commercial, financial and industrial center of the country, it represents the main-stream of economic activities.It isw Pakistan largest and worlds 8th largest business elective representative body.

Management

The organization's policies and programs are determined by the 30 members of Managing Committee which are elected by the members, out of which have retire every year and in their place, new members are inducted through election. The President elected by the members (General Body) and the Managing Committee every year elects Senior Vice President and Vice-President. President controls the working of office and staff and directs all matters of the Chamber, with the assistance of Senior Vice-President and Vice-President.

Research and development

Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry rendering valuable services for Karachiites business community. Its research and development department conducting valuable research reports and imparting useful information. Recently it hired the services of Dr.Syed Mehboob, renowned researcher, writer and columnist as head of its research department. This is another milestone in its history of valuable services. KCCI is prominent among Pakistani chambers that have vibrant, active and dynamic research department. Its weekly magazine "Economic Horozon" is widely read and admired by business community specially the research article of Dr. Syed Mehboob on Pakistan energy crisis and its impact on Pakistan's economy, employment, exports is worth reading. This department produced more than 100 reports on trade,industry and economy of Pakistan. It also had played important role in brainstorming for Pak Afghan Joint Chamber which would play important role for economic development and trade enhancement in the region.
The Department linked KCCI with academia and after a through brain storming of Dr.Syed Mehboob and Mr.Abdul Azeez Allah Walla Chairman Research and Economic Development cell with the guidance and support of Mr.Muhamma.d Saeed Shafiq, President KCCI, Mr.Talat Mahmood Senior Vice President KCCI, Mr.Junaid Ismail Makda Vice President KCCI and Mr.A.Q Khali Ex President KCCI took a quamtum step and signed an MOU with Greenwich University , one of the leading management Science institute on 17th May,2011. Another mile stone achievement was prominent scientist Dr.Atta ur Rehman's visit and delivered a valuable lecture to KCCI members, academia and researhers highlighting Pakistans advancement in scence and technology.Positive Pakistan Movement also is the theme of KCCI's researchers.
