The Kannada/Karnataka flag is a bicoloured flag. The flag is divided into two horizontal strips of equal length and breadth with yellow strip on the top and red strip at the bottom. The Yellow and Red signify Peace and Courage respectively.

This flag was first conceived as the flag of a political party called "Kannada Paksha" which was formed in 1965 by Mr M. Ramamurthy. The political party did not last long, but the flag has been consistently used all over Karnataka to represent Karnataka and Kannada. This flag is hoisted on November 1st on the occasion of Kannada/Karnataka Rajyotsava, which is a state holiday, in every public institutions and educational institutions and after hoisting the flag state anthem 'Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate

The Kannada flag can be seen along with Indian flag on government buildings in Karnataka fluttering at a height lower than that of Indian flag. There is no government order elevating it to official status. Recently the ex-chief minister of Karnataka Mr. Yeddyurappa withdrew circular imposing curbs on hoisting Kannada flags on government buildings which had created a huge uproar in Karnataka. The emotional binding and respect for the Kannada flag is as intense as that for the national flag.
