 were called as “Kumara Thrayaru” of the Kannada Cinema. He acted in 11 films with Rajkumar.

He was born in 1936. He was named as Sampath Iyengar. His parents wanted him to be a doctor. But passion for acting brought him to Kannada film land.

Film career

His first film was Natashekhara, which was released in 1954. Some of his memorable films are: Sadarame, Subbashastri, Rayara Sose, badukuva Daari, Mavana Mgalu (Sasuraal in Hindi), Arishina Kunkuma, Bedi Bandavalu, Belli Moda, Kathaa Sangama, Kaleju Ranga, etc.

In Bhoodaana the three 'Kumars' of Kannada films, Raj, Uday and Kalyan acted together. It was made by one of India’s prominent Director (famous for Sanskritt films) G V Iyer.

He acted with many prominent heroines of his time. A few to name are: B Saroja Devi, Sahukar Janaki, Kalpana, Jayanti, Bharati, Arati, and others.

He acted in quite a few Telugu and Tamil films also. His Tamil film Nenjil Oru Alayam was later made in Hindi as Dil Ek Mandir with Rajendra Kumar. As he was gaining popularity in Tamil filmdom, he started acting in more of Tamil movies. But, the regional politics reigned over his acting talents and he started getting less chances. By the time he returned to Kannada film world, it was too late.

He tried in other fields of business; but failed. Later he got character roles to play in Kannada films and in TV serials too.

He married a Kannada film heroine, Revati.
