Preface

As a result of the environmental objections being raised by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests on the current proposed location of the Navi Mumbai International Airport
Navi Mumbai International Airport

area, because the construction of the airport would involve reclamation of low-lying areas in an ecologically fragile zone as well as destruction of several hectares of mangroves, other locations are being actively being considered, which includes the one off village Nevali near Kalyan-Ambernath 55 km away from the current airport in Mumbai. There exists an old and abandoned concrete runway of World War II era and the Airports Authority of India owns the 1800 acres (7.3 km²) of land on which it is located. The proposal is now centred around those 1800 acres (7.3 km²) of land. If the current location at Kopra Panvel does not go through, then the Kalyan-Nevali location would be considered for a future Kalyan International Airport which would serve as a much needed second International airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan region.

History

The airstrip at Nevali was used by the RAF (Royal Air Force) and British pilots during World War II as an important Airbase to give operational cover to Bombay region. Almost 2 squadrons of aircraft numbers more than 40 RAF Spitfires and Vampires were deployed at this air base. The airstrip meets the basic requirement of an obstacle-free land for construction of a world-class airport, this site has sufficiently demonstrated its air worthiness too. It was one of the busiest air bases of the British during the World War-II.
Till date, a concrete runway direction 18/36 (North - South) which was used for take-offs and landing of war planes by the British and its allies, exists at the Nevali village in Kalyan, albeit in an abandoned state. The ownership of the land resides with the Airports Authority of India, and the extract of 7/12(land record) shows the ownership of the 1700 acres (6.9 km²) of land is with the Airports authority of India.
A small portion of the land is used by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) for research activities.
The total area of the Nevali air base is over 1800 acres (7.3 km²). Post-Independence, the ownership of the land was transferred to the Ministry of Defence. Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in his younger days in 1970s have landed here at the airstrip to deliver a lecture at the nearby Birla College.

Benefits of Kalyan location

  • The Airbase at Nevali was used by the Royal Air Force and the British pilots during World War II as an important Airbase to give operational cover to Bombay region.
  • Almost 2 squadrons of aircraft numbers more than 40 RAF Spitfires and Vampires were deployed at this Airbase.
  • The Airbase still has a concrete runway direction 18/36 (North - South) that was used by the British warplanes during World war II, some old hangars as well as the remains of Control Cabin also present.
  • The total area of the Nevali Airbase is over 1800 acres (7.3 km²) which is relatively free of any natural obstacles, and as there was a operational airbase 60 years ago, the site is already surveyed as fit for landings and takeoffs. its potential for flight landings and take-offs has been tried as tested as the Nevali Airbase was once a full fledged and operational British Airbase during World War-II.
  • Post independence the ownership of the land was transferred to the Ministry of Defence and latter to the Airports Authority of India, and over the past 60 years the airstrip was never has anytime used or has been activated.
  • No possibility of CRZ (Coastal Regulatory Zone) violations, flattening of mountains or diversion of any rivers.
  • The site has sufficient land for two parallel runways length 14700 ft (4,480.6 m) or 4,500 mts in the direction 18L/36R and 18R/36L (North - South), additional 800-1000 acres of land can be easily acquired for further expansion like cargo hub and cargo handling facilities.
