KLAQ began operations in 1978, replacing El Paso's previous rock station, KPAS 94FM (93.9), which changed formats in late-1981. KPAS changed due to mismanagement.

KLAQ is the fifth largest radio station in El Paso audience wise, according to Arbitron Fall 2008 ratings. The station is generally known as a promoter and catalyst of the largest events and entertainment in El Paso. The station is home to Buzz Adams.
