Justus Carl Hasskarl was a Dutch explorer and botanist specialising in Pteridophytes, Bryophytes and Spermatophytes.

Biography

He was cofounder of the Society of natural Curiosities of India, in Bavaria. He made researches for many years on the flora of Indonesia.

In 1834, he was developing studies in natural history, preparing for expeditions.

In 1836, he traveled to Java, entering the Botanical Garden of Buitenzorg (Bogor), and in 1837 he began working on botany. With director Johannes Elias Teijsmann

, they together rearranged their crops to taxonomic families, which would result in the displacement of many specimens in the botanical garden.

In 1852, the Netherlands government sent him to Lima, and in early 1853, he made an expedition to the interior of Peru. He sent his collections of seeds and specimens to the Netherlands. He reached the eastern border of Lake Titicaca.

He returned to Java and in 1856 definitely returned to Europe in poor health.
