Political career
On October 1, 1959, Lane, faced with a $30 million city budget, became the mayor of Tampa. During his term in office, he closed the Clara Frye Hospital, merging its services with the Tampa Municipal Hospital, and also expanded construction of the sewer and storm drain system.
