Szabo was born into a long time railroading family. He started his own railroading career in 1976 with the Illinois Central Railroad. He worked numerous positions, including as a yard switcher, road trainman and a commuter conductor. Szabo earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Labor Relations from Governors State University
