He married Charlotte Cornish, daughter of James Cornish of Teignmouth, on 14 February 1786. He was shortly afterwards offered a place on the Supreme Council in Calcutta, returning in 1790.

In 1792, he was appointed Governor-General of India

 and made a baronet. He served as Governor-General until 1797 and in 1798 was created Baron Teignmouth in the Peerage of Ireland
