Nevin qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics by winning the 1st European Qualifying Tournament

after he beat China's Yu Gu in Milan. He won his quarter-final 7-5.
In the semi-final he lost by 5-4 to Russian Eduard Abzalimov, and so took away a bronze medal. In Baku, Azerbaijan he qualified for the 2012 London Olympic games by reaching the quarter-finals of the 2011 AIBA World Boxing Championships, subsequently he reached the semi-finals by beating Orzubek Shaymov of Uzbekistan 19-17 to claim another world championship bronze medal, as a result he has the distinction of being the first Irish boxer in history to claim two world championship medals.
