The school opened in 1963. Today the school is a Texas 4-A school with a population of approximately 1,400 students.

 visited San Antonio on November 21, 1963 and promised to return and dedicate the new John F. Kennedy High School, which was the first high school named in his honor. He was assassinated in Dallas the following day.

The Mighty Rocket Band

The Band program has been recognized as outstanding in the San Antonio area.
The most recent trophies held by the Rocket Band are a 1st place finish overall 4-A band in the Fredericksburgh Marching Competition also receiving first place for marching (October 2009), 2nd place finish in the Northside Competition (September 2009), 1st Division UIL Concert/Sight Reading Contest (April 2007) (April 2010), 1st division UIL marching contest (November 2007)(November 2009), Region marching contest and a 3rd place trophy at Drums Along the Medina Marching Competition. (October 2006)
The Mighty Rocket Band also participates in Fiesta Activities such as Battle of the Bands, The Battle of Flowers Parade, and Fiesta Flambeu Parade.
