Joel deliberately bucked following his father and brother into the acting business, opting instead to act as a force behind the camera, producing several movies throughout the 1970s and 80s. Douglas was also the head of the now defunct Victorine film Studios, in Nice, France.
During the 1980s, Douglas was married for several years to movie production co-ordinator Patricia Reid, whom he met in France, when she was an employee of Victorine Studios.
