He grew-up on Long Island, NY and for a brief period in California in the 1950s. His father (Channing Allen) died in 1955. His older brother, also Channing, was killed in Vietnam by a sniper in 1967. He was awarded a bronze star for his efforts in evacuating other wounded soldiers.

In 1967 Jefferson married Evita "Evi" Walter in New Jersey. They have three children Rebecca Jane (1974), Channing Sayles (1977), and Jefferson Mast (1981).

Jefferson is a former Senior Vice President of Weeks Petroleum Company,which was a Bermuda registered petroleum exploration and production company with operations around the world. After serving as CEO and Chairman of the Board of Comfed Bankcorp he became CFO and later President of Tosco Corporation an independent petroleum refining company. After spectular growth duning the 1990s Tosco was acquired by Phillips Petroleum in 2001. He was also CEO of Premcor Inc which was purchased in 2005 by Valero Energy Corporation for $8 billion. Valero became the largest refiner in the US.

Expert in all aspects of company management and particularly acquisitions and improving operations to increase sales and profits - Which was done with both Tosco and Premcor.
