Jeff Jacobson was a Republican
member of the Ohio Senate
, representing the 6th District starting 2001. Previously he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives
from 1992 until 2000.
Jacobson hoped to succeed Doug White
as president of the Ohio Senate following the 2004 election (White was prevented by Ohio
's term limits laws from running for re-election). However, in the summer of 2004, it was revealed that Jacobson was involved with associates of Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder
, Brett Buerck
and Kyle Sisk, who were under investigation for violating federal and state campaign financing laws. (They were subsequently cleared of all charges). In July, Jacobson announced that he would not seek the Senate's top job and settled for the No. 2 spot as president pro tempore, allowing Senator Bill Harris
to take the top slot.
Despite these difficulties, Jacobson easily won re-election in 2004 against Democratic challenger Jason Stanton.
In 2008, a series of articles in the Dayton Daily News detailed the finances of the Montgomery County, Ohio Republican Party during the time that Jacobson and his successor, then Representative John White, served as party chairman. The articles revealed that Jacobson and White raised large sums of money for the party, but that much of it was paid as compensation to Jacobson.
Senator Jacobson resigned effective on October 31, 2008 due to term limits. His term would have expired at the end of 2008. Former Senator Jacobson was appointed to the Ohio State Medical Board by Governor Ted Strickland shortly after his resignation. He also announced that he would be starting a consulting firm and that one of his first clients would be the Ohio Business Rountable, for whom he would be an advisor on school funding issues.
In 2009, former State Auditor and Attorney General Jim Petro hired the firm of Jim Nathanson and Associates to assist with his campaign for Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court, with Jacobson assisting as a subcontractor of Nathanson's firm. As of May, 2009, former Senator Jacobson is registered as a lobbyist for three entities: the Ohio Business Roundtable; the Business Alliance for Higher Education; and the Ohio Wholesale Beer and Wine Association.
