.Janjgir was made the district on 1997 after it was carved out of Bilaspur.It is well known for its famous Vishnu Temple.Janjgir is undergoing very fast industrial developments and is going to host various thermal power plants in the coming years.Janjgir is well connected to railways and roads.The railway station of Janjgir is called Naila after the portion of the city in which it is located .Though there has been several attempts made by the people to renew its name as Janjgir.
Every year,the city organises "Jajwalya Dev Lok Mahotsav",a cultural programme in gratitude of King Jajwalya known to rule the city in ancient times.

Janjgir has been the residence of Miss A.C Funk,a Christian Missionary who lost her life in Titanic.Her house still lies deserted in the city and people often visit the ruins of her house.Further,the Nahariya Baba Temple,a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman has always been a place of interest for the tourists.Janjgir is connected to major cities like Bilaspur and Raipur through N.H 200.

Janjgir had a population of 32,495. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Naila Janjgir has an average literacy rate of 70%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 59%, and female literacy is 60%. In Naila Janjgir, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Religious Place

Vishnu Mandir

Vishnu Mandir was built by the kings of the Hayhay dynasty in the 12th century, but did not complete it. The temple was built in 2 phases. The temple is an incomplete temple which can be seen near Bhima Talab.

Hanuman temple

It is famous templa and formally called Nahriya Baba Dham stay at Naila canal railway crossing.

Manka Dai mandir

The Manka dai Mandir is a famous temple in janjgir. On discovering the idol, he started worshipping it and hence attracting public attention.

Transportation

Janjgir is a connected with SEC railway and its railway station is Naila. It is well connected to the rest of the country through the Indian Railways. The station is on the main Mumbai-Kolkata (Calcutta) rail line with daily connections to Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune,Nagpur, Puri, Vishakhapattnam and Ahmedabad. It is also the originating station for daily trains to :

The city is connected with Mumbai and Kolkata via Bilaspur,Raipur through the National Highway network. Janjgir is on NH-200 connecting Raipur and Raigarh on either side.

Three-wheeled, black and yellow Auto rickshaws, referred to as autos, are a popular form of transport. They can accommodate up to eight passengers. Local transportation also includes manpowered cycle Rickshaws, horse drawn Tongas.

There are regular buses and taxis to all nearby towns and cities. Janjgir aerodrum is Khokharabhatta, 05 km away. It is not served by any scheduled airlines.

Culture

The people of Janjgir also have a great tendency towards adopting new trends and life styles. Janjgir thus is multicultural for people from all over India have come and settled in this region.

The people of this region are very fond of colors. The dresses they wear are very colorful. Women wear sarees with Kardhani. In rural areas women wear mala made of one rupee coins. Though this has gone out of trend these days. The people of this region are also known for creating humour out of language. Comical plays are very popular and are worth watching.

Janjgir is rich in its cultural heritage.Janjgir has its own dance styles, cuisine, music."Raut Nacha" (performed basically by Yadav caste, this folk dance has bagged many awards at state level) and the Panthi and Soowa dance styles.

Economy

There are significant lead deposits in the area of Janjgir.Most of the city's workforce is involved in the agricultur industry or in rice or flour milling. There is also some presence of a chemical industry.
