Jackson Avery is a fictional

. He was a recurring character in the sixth season before being made an official series regular for season seven. He was introduced in the season six episode "Invasion" as a former surgical resident at Mercy West Hospital who joins the staff at Seattle Grace Mercy West after the merger.
, and while inebriated he kisses her at a party, but she breaks the kiss and later tells him that it never happened. His grandfather is admitted to Seattle Grace in the episode "Perfect Little Accident." He is in town to try to convince Jackson to take a position at Massachusetts General Hospital, which his grandfather has had held for him since he graduated from medical school. However, Avery refuses again. In the season 6 finale, he is told by Dr. Shepherd that there is a lock down in the hospital and is left by Dr. Hunt and Dr. Altman in the OR with two nurses and the anesthesiologist. He decides that Cristina should operate on Derek Shepherd in the empty OR in order to save him. When Gary Clark takes the OR hostage, Avery takes the leads off and hides them under the operating table and lets Clark believe that Derek has flatlined and died. When Clark leaves he quickly reattaches them and they finish operating and subsequently save Derek's life.

When the hospital installs state-of-the-art security systems to prevent another shooting, the hospital accidentally goes on lockdown and Jackson is trapped with a coding patient. He has a panic attack and screams for somebody to get him out of there. When he's freed, he's visibly upset and kicks things out of his way. Later, he quits Owen Hunt's trauma certification, angry with Owen for attempting to teach him that trauma isn't fair, as he had already lost two friends in the shooting. Owen refuses to accept that as an excuse for quitting and forces him to complete the drill.
While at work, Jackson starts to notice (or so he thinks) nobody wants him on their team, and his mood only worsens when Bailey tells him to watch a patient who is basically stable. When the patient unexpectedly goes into cardiac arrest, Jackson is forced to take charge and takes her to the OR, where he performs surgery on the patient all by himself. He is unable to save her and is now more than ever convinced that he will get fired. Later at Cristina and Owen's housewarming party, Jackson finds out that Alex treated April poorly after she wanted to slow down their sexual encounter, and attacks Alex, taking out his anger on him. Lexie later ices his knuckles and it is implied that Jackson might have feelings for her. He later indirectly confides in Lexie about his self-loathing about surviving the shooting while Charles did not.
The season gradually displays Jackson's interest in Lexie, and finally by episode 17 of the season he confronts her about it. When Mark and Lexie break up once again, Mark arranges for Jackson to scrub in on one of his surgeries, if Jackson gets Lexie to talk about how she feels about the breakup. Jackson talks to Lexie, who eventually confides in him and tells her that Mark has left her behind once again in order to have what he wants in his life, and even though she misses him, she doesn't want to be with him anymore. Jackson chooses not to tell Mark about this, as he feels Lexie told him in this in good faith and trusts him. He invites her to have a drink at Joe's, which she turns down because she needs to be alone. However, she then suggests they have a drink the day after that, which Jackson happily accepts and realizes he likes her.
Jackson and Lexie continue their casual flirting with each other. When a patient of theirs must break up with his girlfriend because if not, she'll infect with him with a disease that will kill him in less than weeks, Jackson and Lexie disagree on what the patient should do. Lexie feels the couple should be given a chance, because being in love is rare, while Jackson feels like there is more than one soulmate out there for everyone. In the end, Lexie realises that not only is this true for their patient, it also applies to herself and Jackson. The two discuss having multiple soulmates, and Jackson tells her men would be lining up to date her. Lexie asks if he would be in that line, to which he responds positive. At home, they're revealed to shower together, with Lexie giving a relationship with Jackson a try. Towards the end of the season, Mark confronts Jackson saying that Lexie is his - he's giving up. Jackson, slightly confused, accepts this and the relationship might become serious. They are officially together at the end of Season 7.

Avery is the grandson of Dr. Harper Avery, one of the most famous surgeons in the country and the namesake of the prestigious Harper Avery Award.
