The township was established soon after Mildura, the Post Office opening on 17 February 1892.

Irymple is most known for IPC (Irymple Packing Co.) sultanas. These are now produced by Sunbeam Foods, who operate the Southern Hemisphere's largest dried fruit packing operation in the town.
