Broadband is available in Ireland via DSL, Cable, Fixed Wireless, 3G Mobile and Satellite. As of November 2007, DSL is available to around 88% of homes and businesses. The number of broadband subscriptions (cable, DSL, wireless, etc.) is 1,361,254 - or a penetration rate of 30.5%, as of Q3 2009. It is also estimated that 67% of Irish households have broadband as of Q3 2009, just slightly above the EU average of 65%. In spite of this broadband provision to rural areas, where a significant proportion of the Irish population live, remains poor.
In 2005, Northern Ireland
became the first European geographic region with 100% broadband coverage and one of a few outside Asia. This was achieved by a partnership between the Northern Ireland Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment and BT Northern Ireland.
