International Council on Large Electric Systems
Encyclopedia
The International Council on Large Electric Systems or CIGRE is a world organization in the field of high voltage electricity
Electricity
Electricity is a general term encompassing a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of electric charge. These include many easily recognizable phenomena, such as lightning, static electricity, and the flow of electrical current in an electrical wire...

 in 1921. The scope of its activities include the technical and economical aspects of the electrical grid, as well as the environmental and regulatory aspects.

More specifically, CIGRE's objectives are:
  • facilitate the technical exchanges among the actors of production and transmission of electrical energy ;
  • communicate the state of the art and the technical knowledge in these fields ;
  • inform the decision makers and regulators in the field of high voltage electricity by means of publication on its magazine Electra or through the organization of biannual conferences, named Sessions that take place on the even years in Paris, France.

Through the years, CIGRE has become a privileged meeting place for actors in the field of electrical energy: researchers, solution providers, utilities, regulators and normalisation institutions, and generally all electrical engineers involved with electrical power.

Internal Organisation

The work at CIGRE is divided in study committees :
  • A1 Rotating Electrical Machines
  • A2 Transformer
    Transformer
    A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors—the transformer's coils. A varying current in the first or primary winding creates a varying magnetic flux in the transformer's core and thus a varying magnetic field...
