The group originally formed when Kevin Systrom worked with Mike Krieger, and received funding from both Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz

. The original project, called Burbn, had numerous features, but after Krieger joined, the team chose to focus the application to one specific feature, and chose mobile photos. What remained was Instagram. The application was live in the iTunes store on October 6th, 2010.

Team

Shortly after the October 2010 launch, Josh Riedel joined the team as their Community Manager, Shayne Sweeney joined the team in November 2010 as their first engineering hire, and Jessica Zollman was hired as a Community Evangelist in August 2011.

Funding
