An inkjet printer is a type of computer printer that creates a digital image by propelling droplets of ink onto paper. Inkjet printers are the most commonly used type of printer and range from small inexpensive consumer models to very large professional machines that can cost up to thousands of...

s. Inkjet printers commonly experience a problem of drying out which blocks the flow of ink. To restore flow, it is necessary to clean the inkjet head by spraying excess ink through all the jets to reapply moisture and unblock the adjacent clogged jets.

The excess ink used for cleaning needs to be collected somewhere to avoid creating a huge mess below the printer, and so inkjet printers have a spittoon hidden inside to collect this ink.

The inkjet printer spittoon is considered an integral and permanent part of the printer which cannot be easily removed or replaced by the end-user. Most inkjet printer users do not know the spittoon even exists, or that the filling up and overflow of the spittoon can be the cause of inkjet printer failures.

Different printer manufacturers use different spittoon technology. Hewlett Packard uses a small plastic tray directly below the cleaning station and cartridge storage dock. Epson uses a large shallow tray below the entire width of the printer, and which contains an absorbent fiber pad to absorb the moisture.
